YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Livestock Marketing and Grazing Manager will be responsible for the design, execution and monitoring of a project that protects and improves local rangelands and introduces an innovative livestock to market strategy that ties livestock markets to conservation benefits. The manager will work closely with private and public partners. This position is a one-year, term-limited position for the duration of a pilot program and he/she will report to the TNC landscape director. The position is based at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) office in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Livestock Marketing and Grazing Manager designs, leads and oversees a pilot project that focuses on livestock marketing as a business and rangeland management within the TNC’s Northern Tanzania program. This new project in priority rangeland habitat aims to deliver economic incentives to pastoralists in two pilot villages who implement improved grazing management practices. He/she leads business planning, technical and program support. He/she serves as the principal contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community in as far as livestock marketing and rangeland management is concerned. He/she establishes TNC as a major partner within the area of livestock marketing and rangeland management; defines priorities in the area of responsibility, and leads and manages a team of at least two community coordinators who support and improve livestock marketing and rangeland management efforts. The Livestock Marketing and Grazing Manager develops key partnerships with private enterprises and public institutions in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices, develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address livestock and rangeland management needs, and engages local community support for local conservation efforts. He/she negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, private enterprises and local communities to conserve and protect natural rangelands and develop and implement innovative livestock marketing strategies that tie livestock markets to conservation benefits.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Designs, implements and monitors a conservation performance-based livestock business plan with communities and other key stakeholder input;
- Pilots at least one community-based rangeland management improvement plan linked to the planned livestock business;
- Leads and oversees training and coaching of two pastoralist communities to implement an improved rangeland management plan;
- Leads the design of a monitoring and evaluation plan to track environmental, social and economic benefits of the livestock to market program;
- Launches the livestock business, as well as improved grassland management and monitoring plans in the two pilot villages before June 2019.
- Supervises at least two staff at remote locations in Northern Tanzania.
- Establishes and maintains optimal performance standards within the approved budget.
- Writes requests for proposals for additional grants or contracts for the program.
- Frequently makes independent strategic decisions based on analysis, ambiguous information and context.
- Negotiates complex agreements, in a political environment.
- Frequently travels domestically and/or internationally, willing to work evening and weekend hours.
- Works in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Coordinates and communicates with TNC staff in Tanzania and worldwide.
- Ensures coordination among numerous stakeholders, partners, and participants for the project.
- BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in livestock marketing and rangeland management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years’ experience with livestock to markets businesses in East Africa.
- At least 3 years’ experience with rangeland management programs.
- Fundraising experience, including identifying funder prospects and funder cultivation.
- Experience designing and managing a complex project, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
- Demonstrated experience in business development.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with business enterprises, non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
- Experience negotiating agreements.
- Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written, to fulfill the diverse technical and managerial requirements of the contract.
- Comfortable with operating in a non-hierarchical and collegial manner.
- 7-10 years’ experience in livestock and rangeland management practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of the livestock sector in Tanzania is highly desired.
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing livestock and rangeland management policies and plans.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
- Ability to develop practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for livestock, rangeland and conservation purposes.
- Knowledge of methods and standards of livestock and rangeland management information systems and initiatives or related field.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Kiswahili desirable.
